I have been making this creme brûlée French toast since the first time I tasted it at Cheesecake Factory. It is perfect for holidays or just a nice at home Sunday brunch recipe.
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup Unsalted butter
- 1 cup brown sugar
- Maple syrup
- 1 inch thick cut slices of French bread or Brioche Bread
- 5 eggs
- 1 1/2 cups of half and half
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1 teaspoon of brandy based orange liqueur
- 1/4 teaspoon of salt
- zest of 1 orange
Instructions
- Start by melting your butter in a small saucepan over medium heat.
- Then add your brown sugar and maple syrup.
Stir all ingredients until the sugar is dissolved. Pour this mixture into a 9×13 inch baking dish and set aside. Now you want to take 1 day old bread either French Bread or Brioche Bread and cut it into 1 inch thick slices. Keep the crust on the bread so that it can absorb the custard you are about to make next. Layer 5-6 pieces of on top of your sugar mix.
To make your custard add your eggs, half and half, vanilla, orange liqueur (Brandy based) and salt. Mix all these ingredients together to highlight the orange liqueur flavor we are going to add the zest of one orange but this step is optional.
After you are done you want to pour your custard mix over the bread and cover the dish and place it in the fridge for up to 1-8 hours. You can also immediately place the dish in the oven but if you want the most flavor I suggest you set it aside for at least an hour before placing it in the oven at room temperature.
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees and cook the dish until the bread is puffed up and has a golden brown color on the top. I suggest checking it after the first 30 minutes and checking it 5 minutes afterwards to make sure you get the color you desire. There is no specific cook time for this dish because it all depends on what type of bread you decide to use.
